Conjunctivitis is an eye disease due to inflammation of the conjunctiva.

The conjunctiva is a thin protective film (membrane) that covers the eyelid and the ocular bulb and has the function of protecting the eye from all the external agents with which it may come into contact.

There are different forms of conjunctivitis depending on the triggering cause:

  • traumatic conjunctivitis following a trauma (stroke or injury)
  • irritant conjunctivitis for exposure to sun, wind or toxic substances
  • allergic conjunctivitis caused by contact with an allergen (substance that causes allergy)
  • bacterial conjunctivitis caused by bacterial infection
  • viral conjunctivitis caused by a virus infection

Some symptoms are common to all forms of conjunctivitis (unspecific symptoms):

  • swelling of the eyelids
  • excessive lacrimation
  • light sensitivity
  • redness of the eye
  • heartburn
  • foreign body sensation in the eye
